A first Seoul City Wall walk does not need to become a full-day hiking challenge. At Naksan, the better question is which section you want to understand, where you will finish and how much energy you want to leave for the rest of Seoul.
Hanyangdoseong was first constructed in 1396 around the Joseon capital. Its historic circuit follows four mountains and extends approximately 18.6 kilometres. Naksan is one part of that larger system, rather than a separate fortress. Visit Seoul’s Hanyangdoseong overview
If your day already includes a palace, compare this outdoor walk with our first-visit guide to Gyeongbokgung before committing to both.
Choose the finish before choosing the photo stop
For a first visit, consider a walk linking the Hyehwamun side, Naksan Park and the Heunginjimun side. Seoul’s official walking guide identifies these as points along the Naksan trail and classifies this section as relatively low difficulty. That classification should not be read as a promise of a flat, step-free route. Seoul Metropolitan Government walking guide
A useful planning method is to pick two fixed points and one optional stop:
| Part of the plan | Decide before leaving |
|---|---|
| Start | The actual entrance or gate, not just “Naksan” |
| Main purpose | Wall details, city views or a relaxed walk |
| Optional stop | A museum or longer photography break |
| Finish | A named gate or station approach |
| Exit condition | Rain, tired legs or your agreed turnaround time |
This prevents the common mistake of continuing simply because the wall continues. A short walk with a clear finish can be more rewarding than a longer route completed while watching the clock.
Read the stonework not only the skyline
Before taking a panorama, spend a few minutes looking at the wall itself. Compare the sizes, shapes and joints of the stones. Ask what looks consistent and what changes between sections.
The city’s heritage interpretation explains that construction methods changed across reigns and that inscriptions can record information about construction responsibility. Its visitor guidance also identifies the Seoul City Wall Museum along the Naksan route. Official Hanyangdoseong interpretation and walking guide
You do not need to identify every stone correctly. A useful personal exercise is to photograph one detail, read the nearby interpretation and then look back at the wall. This turns the visit into a historical observation rather than a sequence of viewpoints.
Avoid assigning a date to a wall section solely because it looks older. Repairs, reconstruction and original material are different things.
Give the walk a generous time window
For an unhurried outing, set aside a flexible block rather than calculating everything from a distance alone. Include the approach from transport, pauses, navigation and the return journey.
Official pages do not currently present a single consistent distance for all versions of the Naksan route. Route endpoints and page updates matter. Check the current map on the Seoul City Wall website, and use your chosen start and finish to plan the day.
As an editorial suggestion, a two-hour block gives more room for a modest walk and pauses than a tightly packed one-hour slot. It is not a guaranteed completion time. A museum visit, children, mobility needs or extended photography can require additional time.
Keep the neighbourhood part of the plan
This is a living city, not an isolated outdoor exhibit. Stay quiet where the path borders homes and avoid blocking narrow passages while taking photographs. Do not climb on the wall. These expectations are included in Seoul’s official visitor guidance. City Wall visitor precautions
Carry water, wear shoes suited to uneven ground and keep one hand free on steps. If conditions are wet or icy, change the plan rather than trying to preserve an itinerary at any cost.
Before you leave your accommodation
- Save the start and finish in your map app.
- Check weather and any route notices.
- Decide whether the museum is essential or optional.
- Allow transport time after the walk.
- Agree on a shorter alternative with your companions.

The most useful first visit is a section you can enjoy attentively, not the longest section you can finish.
